About Our Coffee 
We at the Corby Coffee Roasting Company, have been enjoying single origin, freshly roasted coffee beans for many years. We love coffee but we hate the single use plastic bags that it comes in. We question the need for a one way plastic degassing valve. Discarded plastic, pollutes our rivers and oceans, takes years to decompose and when it does, the resulting micro plastics end up in our food chain. We set out to find an alternative.
Our packaging has to keep the coffee dry, keep it out of direct sunlight and protect it from moisture and foreign odours. It also needs to be heat sealable and conform to EN 12432 which is an internationally recognised certificate that not only stipulates how quickly our packaging must compost but also what nutrients the end product must contain. Not an easy task.
The first thing we needed to do was remove the one way degassing valve, (often associated with multi layered plastic coffee bags). It is used to increase the shelf life of a bag of coffee but does nothing to improve its flavour. We rest our coffee beans for a few days after roasting, this allows the gases that accumulate during roasting to be gently released. We then heat seal the beans inside one of our compostable potato starch bags that are certified to EN 12342. Click on the link below to find out more.
The coffee is then posted to our customers via free first class Royal Mail. We recommend that the coffee is decanted into an airtight container upon delivery to ensure that freshly roasted aroma lasts as long as possible. Our coffee bag has the seedling logo stamped onto it and will fully compost within months.
