Our Potato Starch Bags

Ever since we began roasting coffee we have been searching for suitable packaging that will keep ground coffee fresh but readily compost once discarded. It is for this reason that we do not use conventional coffee bags, they are generally made from multiple layers of single use plastic, include a one way air valve and once thrown away, litter our planet for years. We needed a bag that would keep your coffee fresh but quickly compost after use.

Our bags are made, as the name suggests from starch based biopolymers that originate from organically grown matter ie plant starches. The crops used are not genetically modified and the starches produced have no added plasticiser. As the bags contain only materials that come from the earth, they will harmlessly return back there once they have decomposed. In fact the bags will harmlessly compost into their natural components within months under the right conditions. Heat helps these bags compost, so they will compost quicker within an industrial setting via your green bin or food caddy but I add mine to my home composter. (Below is a 16 week slideshow, showing how quickly our coffee bags compost).

Your coffee, once roasted will be allowed to degas for a precise period of time (50% of the gases produced during roasting are emitted within the first 24 hours), then ground the following day and placed in a compostable potato starch bag. It will then be posted to you to be placed into a coffee tin upon receipt. A link to our Airscape container can be found here Airscape Container. The empty bag can be placed in your food caddy bin or garden waste bin where it will decompose into humus.
