Nicaraguan Plan Vivo is grown in the Jinotega and Matagalpa regions in the North of the country. Here a cooperative of coffee farmers produce coffee beans in an agro tourism environment. This involves growing their coffee beans in a sustainable manner which will offset the effects of global warming and facilitate carbon capture. In return for this carbon capture method of coffee growing, the farmers receive carbon credits. These can then be sold to supplement their income ensuring the long term viability of the project. To date 30,424 tonnes of carbon has been captured by the 2,655 farmers involved in the scheme. The coffee beans are certified organic.
